Shopian teen Saima Wani buried after two back-to-back funerals

Shopian: Thousands of people on Sunday participated in the funeral prayers of teenage girl, Saima Wani who succumbed at SKIMS Srinagar last night.

At least two back to back funerals were held to accommodate the huge rush of mourners who had turned up at Saima’s native Aodoo village Saima (20) was injured during a gunfight between militants and government forces on January 24 in Chaigund hamlet of the district.

The deceased was also sister of Hizb militant Sameer Wani who was killed in the gunbattle with forces.

With her death, the number of civilians killed in Shopian since January 25 has reached six.

Witnesses said thousands of people from Pulwama, Shopian and adjoining villages participated in the funeral of Saima amid pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.

They said ‘taranas’ were broadcast over the public address systems during the funeral.

Meanwhile, a complete shutdown is being observed in Pulwama and Shopian districts against her killing.

All shops and business establishments remained closed while traffic was off the roads.

Mobile Internet service was suspended in both the districts last evening.
